My fellow brethren in Christ Jesus greetings to you all. Now we are closing into the festive season, the reason most of us don’t really know nor understand the meaning. Now some teachings have arisen denouncing the term Xmas but this is due to lack of knowledge. The word Xmas does not denote anti-Christ.,in fact the word Xmas from the Greek tongue is translated from the words ‘krismas, eksmas’ with X representing the initial chi of Greek Khristos -Christ and ‘mas’in Greek meaning a gathering of people. The ‘Greek word for Christ is
χριστός (chrīstós), meaning “anointed one”.
Now why celebrate Christmas/Xmas?
The reasons are not inherently/originally pagan as some argue. Note that before 25 December was made a celebration of the incarnation of the eternal Son of God, the myth of Santa Claus was employed to sell Christmas goods as early as the mid 1820s. Santa became a common commercial icon- a figure used by merchants(business people) to attract the attention of children to particular shops. In scripture God ordained certain festivals and feasts to be observed so that His people could have a hint of what the new creation would be like. In this sense celebrating Christmas/Xmas from the Greek translation means Christ’s gathering or the gathering of people for Christ. Figuratively Christmas speaks of the gathering of Christians to share the love of God. That is why it is said it is a season of giving.
So instead of celebrating the pagan myth of Santa Claus we ought to gather together and celebrate what Prophet Isaiah in:
Isaiah 9:
[6]For to us a Child is born, to us a Son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder, and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father [of Eternity], Prince of Peace. [Isa. 25:1; 40:9-11; Matt. 28:18; Luke 2:11.]
[7]Of the increase of His government and of peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from the [latter] time forth, even forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this. [Dan. 2:44; I Cor. 15:25-28; Heb. 1:8.]
Christmas/Xmas was first celebrated in Rome about 336 during the 4th century and began a major Christian event in the 9th century. We celebrate the birth of Christ Jesus. It is also known as the feast of nativity (birth) of Christ. So let us go celebrate this remarkable birth of Christ this season.
